Hiring the right builder for the job
Bottom line, it’s your bottom line which matters to me. You should not pay more than $100,000 USD to build a beautiful, turnkey luxury home. You can build a comfortable, gorgeous two-bedroom bungalow–including a pool and landscaping–for less than $50,000 USD. The question is: How do you select the right builder?
In my first three months living here, I met with over 55 tradespeople who referred to themselves as builders. I was stunned at the difference in price quotes for doing the same work.
One interesting thing I found, builders with a high volume of North American clients usually charge the most because you’re paying a premium for the convenience of an english-speaking builder. Whereas, you can save yourself money by getting the exact same type of build done by a Spanish-speaking builder.
I have a property near Portalon, and before I started building, a lot of prep work was needed on the lot. I ‘tested out’ six different builders. I gave them each a set of tasks so I could see how they work and get a feel for who would be the right builder(s) to work with. Through this trial and error on my own land, I am happy to share that I now have four different construction companies which stand out above the rest and who I trust to get the job done right.
